About Us

Functional Character workshops have been running since 2018, and what began as a small local gathering quickly grew into a passionate community of dog guardians, trainers, behaviourists, and professionals who wanted to understand dogs on a far deeper level.

Over the years, the Beyond the Breed Event Team has become completely immersed in this work - witnessing again and again how a dog’s behaviour finally “makes sense” once you understand their internal role, their emotional needs, and the instinctive blueprint they were born with.

What started as curiosity soon became a mission.

We’ve watched families regain harmony, multi-dog households relax, and guardians finally feel relief after years of confusion… simply through understanding their dog’s Functional Character.

That’s why we’re now taking this knowledge as far as we can - through workshops across the UK, talks, courses, online resources, and our growing community of dog lovers who want to see dogs understood, supported, and celebrated for who they truly are.

Functional Characters changed everything for me.

I’ve lived with dogs since 1962 and have worked professionally with them since 2002, but nothing has transformed my understanding of canine behaviour as profoundly as discovering Functional Characters. After sharing life with over 100 dogs, I thought I had seen most things… until this framework revealed the inner world of dogs in a way nothing else ever had.

Since then, my behaviour work, my assessments, and my workshops have all evolved into something deeper, clearer, and far more compassionate. Helping guardians finally understand “why their dog is the way they are” has become my life’s work.

At every workshop and every consult, my goal is the same:
to help you see your dog from the inside out - their needs, instincts, emotions, and their natural role in the world.

All attendees receive access to an online Theory Session before the workshop, which introduces the foundations of Functional Characters and prepares you for the practical elements of the day. This is supported by your printed workshop workbook, which you’ll use throughout the event.

During the workshop itself, our practical observation sessions take place both indoors and outdoors, as dogs often show subtle differences in behaviour depending on their environment.

These sessions allow you to watch canine communication, group dynamics, and your dog’s Functional Character “in action,” with real-time explanation and guidance from the team.
